After years of planning, hard work, and lots of sacrifices, the Boren family of four officially moved aboard our 36 foot sailboat THIRD DAY on July 4th 2008, Independence Day! Of course the extensive 30 month refit wasn't completely finished, but we fully expect to complete our cruise before making it through our to-do-list and improvements we would like to make to our 1978 Pearson 365 Ketch. Realizing and more importantly coming to terms with this simple truth of a "pre-cruise to-do-list" is critical in surviving the emotion and stress packed process of leaving friends and the life you have known behind when preparing to cast off the dock lines. The four man crew of THIRD DAY consists of her Captain, Richard Boren, operating under the close supervision of his wife, Co-Captain, and Go/No-Go decision maker Lori Boren. Amy (age 10) and Jason (age 9) make up the shore party expedition contingent of the crew, but only after they have finished their home schooling and boat chores for the day!
Every year a growing number of families with young children are heading out on such an adventure. We are not alone, but we do realize that we are not normal by conventional standards; however, normal is not something we have ever pursued or sought as a definition for the Boren family. You can see normal all around you every day, so the goal of this website is simple, to share our experiences of not being normal for others to see that it's ok to think and act outside the box. Which starts to answer the obvious question of why a family out cruising would feel the desire to maintain a website, post photos and make Blog entries, for strangers on the internet? Why take time away from enjoying our cruise to film and produce cruising DVDs and detail our trip for people we don't know? We do have family and friends following our adventure and all of the aforementioned projects are a great way for them to keep up with our adventure and confirm that we haven't been taken prisoner by pirates, but we also want to use our website to help further some of our cruise goals.
