THIRD DAY may be a 30 year old boat, but she is outfitted with the latest in HF Radio communications and we can send/receive emails from offshore or at anchor through our Icom M-802 Single Side Band/Ham Radio. For those of you old enough to remember a 14.4K dial-up modem, the send/receive rate over the HF Radio is a “smoking” 600 to 1200 bauds or equilivant to a 0.6K to 1.2K dial-up Modem! So no email attachments of ANY KIND can be sent or received over our HF Radio.
Despite the limitations, the old fashion simple text emails come through with no problem. In order for us to receive your email over the HF Radio, we must first add your address to our “safe senders list”, which cuts down on the spam clogging the airwaves. So if you would like to send us a comment or ask us a question about anything to do with our trip, boat or level of sanity, first send your email to our svthirdday@yahoo.com address and we will then add you to our safe senders list for future communications. We will be able to access our Yahoo web mail when we are in an area with internet connection, which is actually quite common in Mexico and Central America these days.
We are also able to keep the Ships Blog Log updated from anywhere at sea along with the location tracker, which shows our last updated position on a world map. As part of the kids home school assignments, they will have to spend some time each day making journal entries, so some of them showing what it’s like to be out cruising will make their way to the blog.
